Report of man with rifle near UH appears to be ROTC exercise

By Star-Advertiser staff

Police officers and University of Hawaii Manoa campus security officers responded Thursday morning to reports that a man in Army fatigues carrying a rifle was seen near the campus.

A University of Hawaii spokeswoman said there were Army ROTC activities Thursday on campus with students dressed in fatigues.

Police received  a call at 8:29 a.m. that a man was seen carrying a rifle near the Longs Drug store in Manoa.

The caller said the man was dressed in what appeared to be Army fatigues, and carrying what looked like a weapon, walking to the Manoa campus.

It probably wasn't even a working weapon, but a drill team prop.

Accordingly, the person of interest was seen near the Longs Drug store in Manoa, and the UH ROTC is located on lower Manoa campus. The ROTC cadets were dressed in fatigues, but were not issued their rifles today. This was not a ROTC cadet, someone else.
