Surfing world abuzz over Kelly Slater video

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 11:16 a.m. HST, Apr 11, 2014

Did professional surfer Kelly Slater come inches away from a shark?

The 11-time world champion denies that he was filmed on camera surfing next to what some believe is a shark in Western Australia, but the vision at 0:56 in the video is stirring speculation and debate in the surfing world.

Slater said he was "100 percent sure" it was just a reflection of another surfer but others have suggested that the mysterious silver shadow in the footage is a great white shark.

The video was filmed using a GoPro camera to show viewers what it's like to surf a wave from Slater's perspective.

Some have disputed Slater's theory and say there are no limbs or contrasting black wetsuit to what could be a white surfboard.

It isn't a shark. You can see the other surfer in a black wetsuit duck diving through the wave before the "shark" appears.

It was a shark. Your logic is severely flawed. For one, the "other surfer", if duck diving from the point on the video, wouldn't still have been under water. More telling is that the shape, whether you believe it a shark or surfboard, was parallel with the wave and Slater. In all my years of surfing, I haven't seen a seasoned surfer duck dive with their board sideways or parallel with the wave.
