No. 4 Cal Poly held Hawaii to five hits and pieced together enough offense to pull out a 4-3 victory on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

Mark Mathias doubled twice and scored once for the Mustangs (29-5, 7-1 Big West), who remain tied with UC Irvine for the league lead.

Kaeo Aliviado hit an RBI double and pinch-hitter Matt Miller singled and scored in the eighth for Hawaii (14-18, 2-6), which has lost five in a row.

Scott Kuzminsky (3-4) took the loss, allowing nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. The Rainbow right-hander walked one and struck out four.

Bryan Granger (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Slater Lee, who allowed two hits and one run on five walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Hawaii put the tying run on third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Stephen Ventimilia and Marc Flores each drew walks. With two outs, Adam Hurley hit a ball that went under the glove of Mathias at second, allowing Ventimilia to score from second and Flores to reach third.

Cal Poly closer Reed Reilly came on to strike out Juliene Jones on the eighth pitch of the at-bat to end it.

The final game of the series is Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
