A Kahului woman died from injuries suffered in a moped crash at the entrance to Puamana Beach Park near Lahaina Monday afternoon.

Police said Mary Fletcher, 50, driving a 2011 Romeo moped, stopped in traffic to make a left turn into the park from Honoapiilani Highway when a 2006 Ford, also traveling north, hit her from behind.

Fletcher was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room with life-threatening injuries. She died at the hospital, police said.

The driver of the Ford, a 78-year-old Kihei man, was treated and released at the scene for minor injuries.

Fletcher was wearing a helmet.

Police are still investigating whether speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The death is the eighth traffic fatality on Maui this year, compared to four at the same time last year. It was also the fifth fatality on Maui roads in the last ten days.
