Starting this Sunday night, drivers on the H-1 freeway in town will again encounter overnight full closures in a single direction, requiring them to exit and use street routes.

The full overnight closures will continue until sometime in July, when the freeway reconstruction work from Ward Avenue to the Likelike Highway is slated to wrap, transportation officials said at a briefing Wednesday.

Those state Department of Transportation officials further revealed, for the first time in any of their briefings on the rehabilitation project, that there’s also a chance road crews might shut down the freeway entirely in both directions on some nights, depending on what conditions they find as they continue to dig into the roadway.

The full closures will take place 8 p.m. through 5 a.m., Sunday nights through Friday mornings. They’ll start this Sunday in the Koko Head-bound direction, and then alternate directions every few weeks or so, until the work is completed, transportation officials said.

Drivers are advised to use alternate routes, such as Nimitz Highway, King Street and Dillingham Boulevard.
