Illinois gives early OK to $100M for Obama museum

By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 07:50 a.m. HST, Apr 17, 2014

CHICAGO >> An Illinois House committee has advanced a plan to devote $100 million in state funds to help bring President Barack Obama's presidential museum and library to Chicago.

The committee voted unanimously Thursday following a hearing in Chicago.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel was among several officials who spoke in favor of the funding.

He says the money would return dividends "well beyond" $100 million. Emanuel also says the funding would be a fitting way to welcome Obama back to his hometown.

Several Chicago sites -- most on the city's South Side -- want to become home to the library and museum. Hawaii and New York also are vying for it.

A spokesman for House Speaker Michael Madigan says the Legislature still must determine a source for the funding.

Congratulations Illinois!

Obama's presence in Hawai'i exacerbates demand thus further jacks up home prices for LOCAL kids further SHUTTING THEM out of the HOME BUYING market!

Hawaii's real estate prices were jacked up sky high long before the Pres and his family started vacations here. A world war two style or plantation style shack 650,000?

Chicago turned him into what he is today - whether you think that is a good thing or bad thing. I'm glad the library is going to Chicago. The most important document on display at the museum will be his birth certificate, lol. There should be plenty of books on the shelves that will tell you how not to do things.

My prayers have been answered. At $100M, there is absolutely no way that this state could come close to making a stupid decision.
