A visitor from Washington state drowned in waters of Haena Beach Park Wednesday afternoon, Kauai County officials said.

The woman, 65, was snorkeling with another woman and a child when a strong current pulled them out to deep water, Ocean Safety officials said.

Lifeguards noticed them in the water waving for help at about 2 p.m.

Two lifeguards on rescue board swam out to them, but the 65-year-old woman was unresponsive.

Lifeguards attempted CPR on the victim while she was taken to shore  at Makua Beach,  but attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

She was taken to Wilcox Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police have not released the victim’s identity.
