A Hilo circuit court jury convicted a 32-year-old Hilo man Thursday of first-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault in the shooting of two police officers, said Hawaii County deputy prosecutor Darien Nagata, who tried the case.

On Jan. 2, 2013, Keaka Martin shot two officers, each in the leg, in a parking lot near Hilo’s Wailoa State Park. The two officers, Joshua Gouveia and Garrett Hatada, testified at trial and have recovered and returned to work.

The jury also found Martin guilty of various weapons charges.

Martin will be sentenced June 20. First-degree attempted murder carries a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
