Waikiki bus company ordered to give back pay

By Associated Press

POSTED:

The U.S. Department of Labor says a Waikiki tour bus company has been ordered to pay $40,000 in back pay and damages to 22 workers forced to work overtime.

The federal agency says Blue Wave Tours Inc. paid tour bus drivers based on how many trips they work. The agency says the company ignored hours worked beyond a normal 40-hour work week.

Hawaii District Director Terence Trotter says employees must be paid for overtime regardless of whether they're paid by the trip or by the hour.

I hear a lot from many how local businesses do things like this and worse. Many do not follow the laws regarding paying of workers and even delay their pay on a regular basis as if that is okay. Then there are businesses that dock workers just because they just so happened to be driving a vehicle that broke down from normal use. These are the kinds of things that our local businesses practice.

Meanwhile the owner of Blue Wave Tours drives a shiny new Porsche Cayenne with an MSRP in excess of $100,000. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
