Flood advisory posted for Big Island

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 12:45 p.m. HST, May 1, 2014

The National Weather Service has posted a flood advisory on Hawaii island because of heavy rain over the Hilo and Puna districts.

Forecasters said radar showed moderate to heavy rain in the areas, which are already saturated because of prior rains.

The advisory includes Hilo, Papaikou and Hawaiian Paradise Park and is in effect until 3:15 p.m.

Forecasters warn residents to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

The rains are from what's left of a cold front that has stalled over Hawaii island.

Another cold front is approaching the state from the northwest.

The system is expected to cut off the tradewinds starting Friday through the weekend, brining muggy conditions with possible afternoon showers in leeward areas.

Trade winds, and the usual windward and mauka showers, are expected to return Monday.
