The use of a mobile electronic device and speeding are suspected in a crash that killed a 25-year-old man in Kihei early Monday morning.

Maui County police said the driver of a 2004 Nissan lost control of his vehicle on Piilani Highway near Liopa Street, crossed the center line and rolled over on the shoulder of the highway at about 3 a.m.

The driver, identified as Terrance Kyle Morgan of Kihei, died at the scene.

A 21-year-old Kihei man who was a passenger in the Nissan, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police said Morgan was not wearing a seatbelt and the vehicle's airbags deployed during the crash. His passenger was wearing a seatbelt.

Police are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

The death is Maui's 12th traffic fatality this year, compared to eight at the same time last year.

Using a mobile device, speeding, not wearing a seat belt, possible intoxication. Was this guy trying to commit suicide? At least no innocent person was hurt. Assuming he didn't have any kids, I nominate him for this year's Darwin Award, at least in the top five by the end of the year. Good riddance loser, no one will miss you.

Thankfully, he didn't hit anyone else. It is really scary to drive by someone texting while driving.

Sue Nissan and the cell phone company! They should have clear warnings telling him that he shouldn't use a phone while driving! I'm getting good at this lawsuit thing. I just have to remember that nothing is ever anyone's fault! It's all evil governments and corporations that are to blame!
