Flags in Hawaii fly half-staff for peace officers

By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 09:26 a.m. HST, May 15, 2014

Hawaii's governor is ordering flags be flown at half-staff in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

President Barack Obama proclaimed that Thursday is Peace Officers Memorial Day and that U.S. flags must be lowered to half-staff.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie is ordering the same for Hawaii flags.

President John F. Kennedy in 1962 proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, which honors law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Abercrombie and Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui have also issued a proclamation designating this week as police week in Hawaii.

Most police are good people, so I don't begrudge them a day of honor. But to put things into perspective, a woman has TWICE the chance of dying in childbirth than a police officer has of being killed on the job. The most dangerous jobs in America (even more dangerous than giving birth) are fishermen, loggers, and pilots. Then, the rate drops for other professions (to below the dangers of giving birth) such as miners, roofers, truck drivers, and police. But it's a curious thing about society that people perceive certain jobs are being more dangerous. Seriously, I know mother's day has passed, but thank your mother AGAIN - she's as brave as any police officer, miner, or pilot.

Mother's don't have to deal with all the trash out there, and risk their lives to protect strangers. Mother's only have to deal with their own trash when they do not do their duty to raise their children right. They have their "Mother's Day", now what's the big deal about Peace Officer's having their own day? Thank You to the many Men and Women who do their best to do the best job they can to protect the public, and to take out the trash, when necessary.
