Hawaii earns rare conference win in baseball

Trevor Podratz tied the game with a two-out, pinch-hit RBI triple in the top of the seventh inning and scored on Stephen Ventimilia’s infield single as Hawaii defeated UC Davis 2-1 on Friday in the opener of a three-game Big West series at Dobbins Stadium in Davis, Calif.

Hawaii senior Matt Cooper (5-5) struck out seven in 7 2/3 innings and Scott Squier earned his first save, striking out Austin March with the tying run on second to end it.

Hawaii (20-28, 4-15) snapped a six-game losing streak in conference play and moved a game behind the Aggies (21-28, 5-14) in the battle for last place in the Big West.

Ventimilia finished with three of Hawaii’s seven hits and Austin Wobrock went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Squier struck out two and allowed two hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Harry Stanwyck (3-7) struck out three and threw 135 pitches in a complete game effort for the Aggies.

The series continues on Saturday morning at 10 Hawaii time.
