LAST UPDATED: 1:27 p.m. HST, May 16, 2014

An early-morning fire destroyed a three-bedroom Aiea home and burned an 83-year-old man, who tried to save his pet dogs.

The fire, reported just before 3 a.m., was fully involved when firefighters arrived at 98-358 Pono St., acting Fire Capt. Craig Souza said.

Brian Liborio, one of three people who lived at the house, said he pulled both of his father and 80-year-old mother out of the burning structure through a window.

Liborio, 50, said his father, 83, sustained minor burns to his face trying to save two dogs. The dogs died along with a parakeet, Liborio said.

Liborio's father went to the hospital and said he tried to extinguish the fire in the garage, but the extinguishers did not work.

Souza said the house and four vehicles were destroyed in the two-alarm fire, that also caused a few explosions.

Firefighters used foam to bring the fire under control in about 45 minutes. Seven companies responded.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.  There was no damage estimate Friday morning.
