The Blue Planet Foundation said Tuesday it is launching an online crowdfunding tool called WEfficiency that will connect donors with nonprofit organizations seeking to raise money to install energy-efficient equipment.

The money saved by the nonprofits through energy efficiency will be used to pay back the donors, who are encouraged to reinvest the funds in the WEfficiency program.

“Many nonprofits face high electricity bills every month, but are unable to pay the upfront cost of new, more efficient equipment that could help lower their bills. WEfficiency helps Hawaii nonprofits unlock the benefits of energy efficiency,” according to the program’s website.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Mayor Kirk Caldwell are scheduled to participate in the launch of the program Thursday at the downtown YWCA on Richards Street. For more information about the program go to www.wefficiency.org.
