Weekend storms, lightning possible for Oahu, Kauai

Tradewinds are forecast to finally return to the islands early next week. But first, the islands, especially Kauai and Oahu, are likely to see rainy and possibly severe weather this weekend.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement warning residents that there's a chance of thunderstorms and lightning this weekend.

"If you will be engaged in outdoor activities over the weekend, keep an eye to the sky and be aware of the possibility for lightning strikes, ponding of water in low-lying and poor drainage areas, and reduced visibility and poor driving conditions in any heavier downpours," forecasters said.

There are a number of public, outdoor activities scheduled this weekend because of graduations and Memorial Day observances.

The rainy weather could continue into Memorial Day, when cooling northwest tradewinds are finally forecast to return.

Forecasters say the moisture in the atmosphere that brought rain to Maui Thursday is expected to move over Kauai and Oahu from the south through Friday.

A weather system northwest of the islands is expected to move south and stall near Kauai. Rain from the system could bring heavy showers to Kauai and Oahu through the weekend.

Muggy, voggy Kona weather is expected to continue through Sunday.

But tradewinds should return by Monday, becoming gusty on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Windward and mauka showers are expected to return with the tradewinds.

Please watch out for the pedestrians, bikers and motorcyclists. Many of us do not have cars and really appreciate if you do not bang us during a storm / limited visibility times.
