WETHERSFIELD, Conn. » A Connecticut man has been charged with murder and cruelty to persons after the decomposed body of his 86-year-old mother was found in their home, police said Friday.
John Waszynski, 59, was arrested Thursday, Wethersfield police said. He appeared Friday in New Britain Superior Court where a judge set bond at $1 million on the murder charge and $5,000 for the cruelty charge, a court official said.
No plea was entered.
Authorities also confirmed the identity of the victim, Krystyna Waszynski, and revealed that the cause of death was neck compression and blunt trauma.
Officers found her body in the family's home May 14 after a relative requested a check on her well-being, police said.
The decomposed body was found in her bedroom, said Chief James Cetran.
"It was there for a while," Cetran said. The medical examiner's office hasn't been able to determine exactly when she died.
A message left with a public defender who represented Waszynski in court was not immediately returned.
Police were also called to the house last September by a neighbor who reported a man screaming outside, Cetran said. When police arrived, Waszynski was calm and a check on his mother found no problems, the chief said.
Police were also called in 2005 on a report of an 80-year-old woman with an altered mental status but there were no issues, the chief said.
Cetran said he has no information on a motive and wouldn't comment on anything Waszynski told police.
