LAST UPDATED: 08:08 p.m. HST, May 31, 2014

A 26-year-old man died Saturday afternoon while attempting to help a family member in distress in waters off Laie Point.

Honolulu Fire Department rescue personnel responding to a 1:41 p.m. emergency call arrived to find two women in the ocean at the base of a cliff holding the man, who was unconscious and without a pulse, according to HFD spokesman David Jenkins.

Firefighters and ocean safety personnel used a water craft to bring the man back to shore, where he was transferred to the care of Emergency Medical Services.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses reported that the man jumped off the cliff into the water in an attempt to help a family member who was having difficulty in the water.

No other injuries were reported.

Caption under picture says car off Laie Point around 1:30 PM; article says 1:55 PM but not the "how" part, just that the man drowned. C'mon, SAd staff - you can do better!

It's so sad when someone dies helping another person. Like when the football player saved Von Appen's son. That is the epitome of selflessness. The survivor must feel so bad.
