Monday’s hot and rainy weather broke and tied records for the date.

Lihue Airport recorded 1.78 inches of rain, breaking the old record for June 2 of 1.01 inches set in 1962.

In addition the high temperature of 91 degrees at the Kahului Airport tied the old record of 91 degrees set in 1992.

National Weather Service forecasters expect more hot and humid conditions Tuesday with the chance of afternoon showers again over leeward and interior sections.

Cooling tradewinds are gradually returning. But they may not be strong enough to prevent sea breezes from developing Tuesday afternoon and daytime heating that may bring afternoon showers.

Forecasters said there is a 40 percent chance of rain on Oahu’s south shore from Hawaii Kai to Kapolei.

Tradewinds are expected to become breezy and gusty by the end of the week.
