Hilo's Kodi Medeiros drafted by Milwaukee Brewers

LAST UPDATED: 05:25 p.m. HST, Jun 05, 2014

Recent Waiakea graduate Kodi Medeiros was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Thursday.

Medeiros, a 6-foot-1 left-handed pitcher, is the highest draft pick selected straight out of high school from Hawaii ever.

The slot value for the No. 12 pick is listed at $2,805,700.

Punahou's Justin Wayne, who attended Stanford and was taken fifth overall by the Montreal Expos in 2000, is the only player from Hawaii drafted higher.

The Kansas City Royals, who had picks 17 and 28, were the team most connected to Medeiros, who worked out in Milwaukee for the Brewers last week.

Medeiros originally committed to Hawaii as a sophomore before changing his mind and signing with Pepperdine last fall.

He was listed as the No. 29 overall prospect by MLB.com.

Kodi, good for you. Now go pro. Do not go to Pepperdine. You can spend all your time playing baseball instead of spending the majority of your time in the library.

YEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAW!!! Good for him. Looking forward to him playing in the majors one day. Medeiros vs. Wong, both Big Island boys, wouldn't that be something.

GO TO SCHOOL young man. They will use you up in Triple A ball and cast you aside. Then you turn around and have no college degree. The money will be there after you graduate.

If you go to school and get your Bachelor's degree and not drafted in the pros', you can get a good job maybe at $40-50,000 per year. On the other hand, if you go pro now, you can make 2.8mil - maybe only 1.4m after taxes. You can always go to school in the off-season. Decisions, decisions, decisions ...

Take the money, can always to college if baseball doesn't work out. Left handed pitchers are most wanted in the major leagues.

Big congrats to Kodi Medeiros, his family, the Milwaukee Brewers and Waiakea High! Reminded me of Houston Astros pitcher Jerome Williams, who was drafted fresh out of Waipahu High in 1999 in the 1st round and selected 39th. Love it when our Hawaii boys and girls succeed!
