No Hawaiian island is among the favorite five of the Top 10 U.S. islands, as ranked by readers of USA Today and 10Best.

Kauai ranked at No. 8, and no other Hawaiian island was listed among the top 10 in the reader survey, which heavily favored islands in the northern latitudes.

Mackinac, Mich. ranked at No. 2, followed by Whidbey Island, Wash., fourth-ranked Mount Desert, Maine and Amelia Island, Fla., which rounded out the top five,

At No. 6 was Assateague Island, Va./Md., Dauphin Island, Ala. was 7th, Kauai was eighth, followed by Block Island, R.I. and Hilton Head, S.C. at ninth and tenth, respectively.

The Puerto Rico Tourism Co. is making hay from the selection, distributing a news release nationwide to tout the honor.

Too many corrupt politicians stealing taxpayer's money in Hawaii, therefore poor infrastructure, potholes, bad traffic, homeless on Kalakaua Ave, etc. No money left.

This has to be a joke. We have our homeless, bad roads etc. but Puerto Rico has crime big time. I wouldn't dare walk in the Condado or Isla Verde areas of San Juan or anywhere in Santurce after five in the afternoon and these are prime tourist areas. Drugs are everywhere and it is a very dangerous place. The island is on par with Newark and Detroit.

Not a joke..only if you stay in tourist areas..i never had a problem outside of that. Even Waikiki is not as safe anymore

salsa...have you ever been to Ponce or some of the other areas outside of metropolitan San Juan? The whole island is riddled with crime and drugs. My tax-free Puerto Rico municipal bonds are practically worthless and considered to be in an almost "junk" category. Consider yourself lucky if you have never seen any crime around the island. And, yes, you are right about Waikiki. It isn't that safe there thanks to the homeless, etc. My family hasn't been down there for a couple of years now because of it.

Peter Schiff just bought a Penthouse at the Ritz Carlton. He reported meeting Seinfeild at the pool. He's moving his business there because there's no federal tax. If you got the money, they got the playground.

What this list shows isn't that "island" doesn't just mean "tropical island" any more. For that matter, our locals might vote for Assateague Island because it's so cool to visit and see the wild ponies. Every island on that list is certainly worth a visit. And we can be happy that we weren't beat by Staten Island.

One wonders if Puerto Rico's lack of an entitled "indigenous" ethnic clique and no semblance of a stink eye culture are factors.

Puerto Rico also has the Tren Urbano, a rail system most like the one going up here. It is a huge financial disaster.
