3 Kauai pit bulls euthanized after mauling dog

LIHUE » Three Kauai pit bulls were euthanized after mauling a small dog.

The Chihuahua mix's owner Lisa Serrano tells the Garden Island she and her 11-year-old daughter watched the deadly attack Thursday. She says one pit bull charged toward her daughter, who dropped their small dog named Lily.

Serrano says the pit bull attacked Lily as four more pit bulls ran from a nearby home and joined in.

"We saw our dog mauled to death right in front of us," she said.

Eventually, the owner ran outside and began hitting his dogs with a pipe to get them to release the helpless animal, according to Serrano.

She said she took the injured pet to the Kauai Veterinary Clinic in Puhi, where a vet told her nothing could be done. Lily's injuries included punctured lungs, deep bite wounds to the throat and a torn off ear.

"This is something that my child will never forget," Serrano said. "This was her best friend."

Serrano says Lily was adopted from the humane society. She's calling Lily an angel for saving her daughter.

County spokeswoman Sarah Blane says the Kauai Police Department cited the owner of the pit bulls with a dangerous dog violation.

Kauai Humane Society Field Services Supervisor Mana Brown says the owner chose to surrender three of his five dogs to be euthanized.

Are you kidding me, to many bleeding heart Left Winged liberal Democrats in Hawaii. They are having a hard time Euthanizing the monster that savagely beat and killed his own child. Never happen in this up side down place. But I agree they should euthanize the owner.

Name one deep red conservative state where they have the death penalty for a dog owner whose dogs maul another dog. Go ahead.

This was murder of a family member. I cannot imagine the trauma placed on the child who was holding Lily. We need better laws to make responsible owners that will comply. The victim could easily have been the child. Condolences...

"cited the owner of the pit bulls with a dangerous dog violation" - What is the penalty? Does the owner have to pay for a new dog for the Serranos, a huge penalty fine for traumatizing a young girl and her mother, and a big fine for having 5 dangerous dogs loose to attack someone? Also, what is this "owner chose to surrender three dogs of his five dogs to be euthanized" - The owner gets to "choose"? All 5 vicious dogs were involved in the attack and all 5 should be euthanized. What kind of enforcement is going on in Kauai?

As with anything the OWNER is responsible for their dog at all times. The leash law only pertains to being in public NOT on the owner's property which most have their dogs on weak ropes or small chains or worse running loose. If you dont have fencing to keep your dogs in your yard you take a risk always. Lucky that girl didnt get mauled or bit in anyway. Of course you could take steps to take them to court and alot of house insurance agencies will NOT insure your house when you have these breeds. Ive raised pitbulls most of my life and never have I ever let them get into situtaions because they were pack animals. Sad these 3 had to lost their lives due to the owners fault.

its not about seeing the other dog as a threat. Dogs are territorial and most dogs will attack strange dogs near or on their property. Sad that this was a pack fight and the girls dog was hurt to the worst.

kpr, you make a lot of good sense in your postings, but to say hurt to the worst, is putting it mildly, how about using language such as savagely mauled, ripped, shredded, dismembered, and killed.
