Bystander helps man escape from robbery suspects

By Star-Advertiser staff

A bystander helped a 42-year-old man escape two robbery suspects in Waikele early Saturday morning, police said.

Police said the two suspects challenged the victim to a fight, attempted to stab the 42-year-old man with a knife, and demanded his belongings just before 2 a.m.

But police said a bystander driving by approached the scene, drove the victim away, and reported the incident to police.

Police did not say exactly where the incident happened and no suspect description was released.

The case has been turned over to robbery detectives.

I wouldn't call him a bystander. Usually the term refers to someone who stands by and does nothing to help rescue a victim. A better term would have been drive-by-rescuer in contrast to drive-by-shooter.
