Portions of the parking lot at Kapiolani Community College, on the makai side of the Kaimuki campus, were closed briefly Monday morning after a commercial garbage truck hit a propane tank causing it to leak, a University of Hawaii official said.

However, John Morton, UH vice president for community colleges, said the accident did not affect the college’s summer classes.

Morton said the driver hit the propane tank near Parking Lot B, near the college’s maintenance shop.

Fire Capt. James Todd said part of the parking lot and 10 people near the college’s maintenance shop were evacuated after fire and hazard materials teams arrived at 6:09 a.m.
