By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 04:53 a.m. HST, Jun 17, 2014

Gov. Neil Abercrombie is appointing two Oahu executives to state boards.

Kailua resident Wesley Furtado is being appointed to serve on the Board of Land and Natural Resources.

The Abercrombie administration said Monday Furtado has 26 years of work experience at the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. He's currently ILWU International vice president responsible for directing and administering union programs and policies in Hawaii.

The governor is appointing Sean Dee of Honolulu to the Hawaii Tourism Authority board of directors.

Dee is currently executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Hawaii's largest locally owned hotel company, Outrigger Enterprises Group.

Both appointments are being made on an interim basis. They are subject to state Senate confirmation.

Furtado's appointment is effective immediately. Dee will join the tourism board on July 1.

"Furtado's appointment is effective immediately" Aside from being a cog on a wheel in the democratic gear box .... why does being a union executive prepare you for protecting our Natural Resources. The DLNR is not all about jobs ... it is about preservation and protection and sustainable use. The Old Boy System is casting around for votes and control. I hope the confirmation team [same party] take a hard look.

Since so much concern for the homeless problems seemed to be centered in Waikiki, why doesn't the tourism board and the visitor industry put up the kala to find a viable solution that will not just kick the can down the road?

Another union hack. It's the same "new day" all over again. I am looking forward to firing Neil and Bill Kaneko via the ballot box in August.

If there is a guarantee in politics, it's that Abercrombie will appoint men unless he absolutely has to appoint the occasional female. Guess there aren't any qualified women.
