A woman between 70 and 80 years old died at Straub Hospital after apparently drowning Tuesday evening in waters near the Outrigger Canoe Club in Waikiki, authorities said.

The woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital after being discovered in waters near the Outrigger Canoe Club, an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said.

Honolulu Fire Department spokesman David Jenkins said people with the Outrigger Canoe Club and a lifeguard pulled an unresponsive woman from waters fronting the makai side of Michel’s restaurant, 2895 Kalakaua Ave.

They tried to revive the woman using a portable defibrillator.

The Fire Department got the call at 6:14 p.m. Firefighters arrived on scene in five minutes and were at her side at 6:21 p.m.

Jenkins said firefighters took over resuscitation efforts, and turned over care to EMS at 6:25 p.m.

Police said she died at the hospital.
