Kauai County worker killed in traffic crash near Eleele

Kauai police reported a 55-year-old county worker of Kalaheo died Thursday morning and two others were injured in a crash involving a semi-truck near Eleele.

Police said the men were believed to be repairing a tire of a parked trailer on the road shoulder of Kaumualii Highway when a semi-truck heading west on the highway struck the trailer at 9:30 a.m.

The truck driver attempted to stop abruptly due to traffic when the truck veered off the roadway and struck the trailer, injuring the three men, police said.

The two other men wree taken to the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The truck driver did not report any injuries, police said.

The highway was closed for four hours in both directions while police traffic safety investigators conducted an investigation.
