Kauai police identified a 55-year-old county worker killed Thursday morning in a crash involving a semi-truck near Eleele as Severino Butay of Kalaheo.

Police said Butay was with two other men, next to a trailer attached to a county pickup truck, when a semi-truck heading west on the highway struck the trailer at 9:30 a.m.

Police said the three men were believed to be repairing a tire on the trailer on the road shoulder of Kaumualii Highway.

The truck driver attempted to stop abruptly due to traffic when the truck veered off the roadway and struck the trailer, injuring the three men, police said.

The two other men were taken to the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The truck driver did not report any injuries, police said.

The highway was closed for four hours in both directions while police traffic safety investigators conducted an investigation.
