Maui firefighters from Paia recovered the body of a missing diver about 25 yards offshore of the Mantokuji Soto Zen Mission Friday night.

The diver, a 32-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene after his body was brought to shore, a Maui Fire Department spokesman said.

Police identified the victim as Linho Pelep, of Kahului.

Police said Pelep was diving with friends, who called authorities when they could not locate him at about 10 p.m.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
