A 27-year-old Kapaa man escaped injury early Sunday morning when the car he was driving collided with a guardrail on the Kapaa bypass road and overturned.

According to Kauai police, the man was traveling north on the bypass road around 5 a.m. when he fell asleep and drove off the roadway into the guardrail near the Kuhio Highway junction.

Both lanes of the bypass were closed for about 40 minutes while the vehicle was removed from the roadway.

The incident marked the third time in less than 24 hours that a vehicle overturned in Hawaii. On Saturday morning, four people were injured when an SUV flipped over in a three-vehicle collision on the H-1 freeway near the Aloha Stadium exit. Later that evening, another person escaped injury when a vehicle overturned on the airport viaduct.
