Fire consumes single-family house in Haiku, Maui

Maui firefighters extinguished a fire at a single-family dwelling in Haiku on Sunday.

The fire, reported at 1:29 p.m., engulfed the kitchen and surrounding areas.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 2:05 p.m. and had it completely extinguished by 3:24 p.m.

One person was home at the time of the fire but was able to escape without harm.

The cause of the fire was an electrical accident, officials said. Damage was estimated at $150,000 to the structure and $100,000 to the contents.
