Unplanned cane fire blackens 270 acres on Maui

An unplanned cane fire blackened approximately 270 acres in Paia on Sunday.

The fire was first reported at 10:36 a.m. off of Holomua Road. Responding fire crews from Paia, Makawao, Kahului and Kihei responded brought the fire 80 percent under control by 3:45 p.m. Mop-up operations have been turned over to landowner Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage estimates have not yet been determined.
