No tsunami threat from large quake near New Zealand

A large earthquake struck off New Zealand but did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials in Hawaii said on Monday morning.
The magnitude 6.9 quake, which was centered 60 miles south-southeast of Raoul Island, New Zealand, struck at 9:19 a.m. Hawaii time, at a depth about 3 miles. The quake was initially reported as 7.2 magnitude, but was later downgraded by the U.S. Geological Survey.
It was followed by a magnitude 6.3 aftershock about 53 miles south-southeast of Raoul Island at 9:21 a.m. Hawaii time.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach said the quake did not post a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
