An Oahu grand jury indicted a 55-year-old homeless man for allegedly attempting to suffocate a 65-year-old Kailua woman in her home while she was sleeping.

Darryl Thomas will be arraigned in Circuit Court on charges of second-degree attempted murder, first degree burglary and second-degree terroristic threatening after he is served with a bench warrant. He is being held in Oahu Community Correctional Center unable to post bail of $1 million.

According to a police affidavit, Thomas broke into the home of Wilma Kam just after midnight June 18 on Old Kalanianaole Road in Kailua.

Police said Thomas forced his way into the victim’s second floor bedroom window, got on top of her and tried to gag her with a cloth.

Kam said that Thomas had been ordered to stay away from her and her home by the courts in September 2013.

Police found Thomas hiding in thick vegetation at 1:45 a.m. while searching Kam’s property.

Police said Kam identified Thomas, and while being escorted by police to a car, Thomas allegedly yelled: “This ain’t over, I am going to kill you and your family,” while looking at the victim’s home.
