A kayaker reported missing off Maili Beach Park Saturday night has been found, Honolulu Fire Department said.

According to the Honolulu Fire Department spokesman David Jenkins, the family of a man in his 50s reported him missing.  He went kayaking around 6 p.m. and the last time family members saw him was around 7:30 p.m.

HFD got the call for a missing kayaker at 8:42 p.m. and arrived on scene at 8:50 p.m.

Crews used helicopters, night vision goggles and thermal imaging to search at night. The Coast Guard also assisted in the search.

At around 10 p.m., the kayaker made it back to shore on his own, Jenkins said.

According to HFD, the man was behaving erratically and was not cooperating with officials. Family members said it was “unusual behavior.”

The man attempted to go back into the water but police restrained him, Jenkins said.

An ambulance took him to a hospital.
