Village Burger in Waimea on Hawaii island was ranked among the top 10 burger restaurants in the nation, according to TripAdvisor.com.

The online travel portal compiled reviews and opinions posted by millions of users to reach its findings.

TripAdvisor's top 10 list said that Village Burger serves traditional beef burgers using locally sourced ingredients, such as the "Big Island" burger and the "Kahua Ranch Wagyu" burger. The restaurant also serves ahi and vegetarian burgers.

"You really can taste the difference with fresh local beef. I am forever spoiled now that I know how a burger can taste," one reviewer wrote.

Eight of the ten on the list, including the 10th-ranked Village Burger, received a rating of 4.5 of 5, while the top two, Black Hills Burger and Bun Co. in Custer, S.D., and Nic's Grill in Oklahoma City, Okla., received a perfect rating of 5.

Only makes me miss old-fashioned Hawaii gravy burgers, a specialty of the many Japanese-American restaurants that used to exist. So ono dakine burger, but all the Kepani-Amelika-restaurant gravy-kine dishes were ono: turtle cutlet, veal cutlet, etc. I really, really, really miss Japanese-American restaurants. I wonder if even one is left somewhere that cooks the old way.

I like very much how this article was written. It shows a sensitivity for island traditions. "Hawaii Island" intead of "Big Island." And "Waimea" instead of "Kamuela." Tourism marketing ploys (BIG is better island) and U.S. Postal Service (Sorry, no identical names for cities) dictates don't trump tradition for all of us! There are so many identical place names in Hawaii, it would have been smarter to use the city-island-state method of postal identities, e.g., Waimea, Hawaii, Hawaii or Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii. No, one Waimea had to become Kamuela, and one Kailua had to become Kailua-Kona (even though there is more than one Kona district in the islands).
