California man blows off hands with fireworks

By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 04:52 a.m. HST, Jul 07, 2014

SAN JOSE, Calif. >> A Northern California man igniting illegal fireworks blew off both of his hands when a device exploded prematurely, police said.

Officer Albert Morales of the San Jose Police Department said the man in his 40s is expected to live. The explosive went off in the man's hands as family members stood nearby late on the Fourth of July holiday.

"It would have had to have been something pretty powerful," Morales told the San Jose Mercury News.

The newspaper also reported that two other men were seriously injured in Sunnyvale while lighting a mortar-like explosive on Friday.

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said that at 10 p.m. the men -- ages 41 and 32 -- were hurt at an apartment complex when the illegal firework ignited prematurely. Witnesses in a group of about 20 people said the men had been trying to ignite the firework when it went off in their hands, officials reported.

One man lost fingers on his left hand and finger tips on the right hand, while officials said the other man lost part of his right hand.

In Southern California, a man lost his thumb Friday after the firecracker he was holding exploded in his hand, Long Beach police said Sunday.

Your headline does not match the story details. Misleading sensationalism or sloppy editing?

How's your reading comprehension?? The headline is directly related to the first 3 paragraphs of the story. The remaining 3 paragraphs relate similar incidents under similar circumstances. What's misleading, sensational, or "sloppy editing" about that?

They have "firecrackers" in the mainland that are the size of quarter sticks of dynamite and no doubt could blow off your hand. But something tells me this guy was rollin' his own. And the other guys, yeah, hard to tell what happened there. Those fireworks mortar kits, the fuses on the shells are real long. Again I gotta figure someone thought they had the skill set to mess around and play Demolition Man.

Yes, lets have Ann Kobayashi in the Honolulu City council to push to allow more people to have an easier time to obtain more fireworks because fireworks in Hawaii are really an Asian "cultural" thing.

Another searing indictment to ban all fireworks, except those done at fireworks shows performed by professionals.

There are those that flaunt the law. And then, those that play with fireworks and get blown. There is guy in our neighborhood who will explode and illegal firework at 2:00 AM just for laughs. Nice guy?
