Washington head coach Chris Petersen takes questions at the 2014 Pac-12 NCAA college football media days at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles Thursday.

Three quarterbacks who have yet to throw a pass in college football will compete for the starting job against the University of Hawaii in the season opener after Washington suspended its projected starter.

Sophomore Cyler Miles will be held out of the Aug. 30 game at Aloha Stadium, University of Washington coach Chris Petersen announced today at Pac-12 Media Day in Los Angeles.

Miles, who was expected to succeed three-year starter Keith Price, was involved in a post-Super Bowl day incident that resulted in misdemeanor assault charges against a teammate.

Miles, who was not charged in the incident, was held out of spring practice. Petersen said today that the opening game suspension, “is part of the follow through to make sure this thing is handled and done correctly.”

Miles guided the Huskies to a 69-27 win over Oregon State when Price was injured. Overall, he completed 37 of 61 passes for 418 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He ran for 200 yards on 23 carries.

With Miles out, the Huskies will choose between sophomore Jeff Lindquist and redshirt freshman Troy Williams, who split the work in the spring. K.J. Carta-Samuels is an incoming freshman.

“We’re excited to get (Miles) back with us and let him get in the mix and let him compete,” Petersen said. “He just won’t play in the first game.”
