A Maui brush fire that scorched 30 acres Tuesday in Maalaea was fully contained by early evening, Maui fire spokesman Lee Mainaga said.

While the fire had not been extinguished by 6 p.m., it was declared as contained, Mainaga said in an email.

Firefighters, including nine members of the Maui Fire Department’s wildland team and nine state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife personnel, battled the blaze Tuesday. No injuries were reported.

The fire was initially reported at 9:14 a.m. on the mauka side of Honoapiilani Highway.

The brush fire was located on the slope of the mountain, making it difficult to access. Two helicopters were launched to help control the fire.

Mop-up work continued throughout the day. Crews will monitor and check the area throughout the night.

A fire prevention inspector has conducted an investigation.
