Tropical Depression Genevieve is expected to intensify into a tropical storm by Thursday and may bring muggy weather and rains to the state.
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center says Genevieve will weaken again as it passes south of the islands this weekend.
The storm was about 565 miles southeast of the Big Island at 5 p.m., with sustained winds of 35 mph, moving west at 7 mph.
The storm is expected to remain at tropical storm strength with winds of 39 mph or higher until Sunday when it will weaken again into a depression.
"While the main activity with Genevieve will remain well south of Hawaii, moisture along the far-northern fringes of the depression will get caught up in the trade winds in the next day or so. The trades will push this tropical moisture towards the southern end of the state," forecasters said.
The Big Island could experience heavy rain from the storm, but it’s not clear yet if the rains will reach Maui County and Oahu.
Forecasters said the storm will likely pass too far south to affect Kauai.
Today’s weather forecast calls for an increased chance of windward and mauka showers over Oahu and Molokai, with a chance of isolated leeward showers. The high temperature may go up to 89 degrees, with tradewinds of 10 to 15 mph.
