Police have opened an arson investigation into fires in Kalaeloa that destroyed two abandoned houses and burned about a quarter acre of land on Monday.

About 30 firefighters responded to a 3:28 p.m.  fire and found one house fully engulfed in flames and a second house was partially on fire, a Fire Department spokesman said. The house fires were under control by 3:55 p.m.

At about the same time, a separate fire burned a quarter acre of brush on Boxer Road near the abandoned homes, Fire Capt. Dave Jenkins said.

There were no injuries.

Jenkins said the plantation-style homes located on the Waianae side of Boxer Road and Saratoga Avenue, and are not part of the old Barbers Point Naval Housing.

There was heavy overgrowth of brush and trees, he said.
