Injured hiker rescued after spending night in Waianae mountains

Firefighters and the department’s helicopter came to the rescue of a male hiker who was forced to spend the night in the Waianae mountain range after he injured his ankle.

Capt. Dave Jenkins, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said the hiker, who was believed to be in his 50s, began his hike Wednesday alone on the Waianae Kai Access Road.

The hiker did not have a cell phone and was unable to call for help when he injured his ankle on Wednesday and was unable to walk. Another group of hikers found the injured man at 9:27 a.m.Thursday and called the fire department, Jenkins said..

A rescue crew reached the hiker at 9:41 a.m. and treated his injury.

The hiker was flown to the Kaneaki Park by the department’s helicopter at 11:03 a.m. and turned over paramedics.
