Hawaii Pacific University is changing its sports nickname and logo from the Sea Warriors to the Sharks.

Hawaii Pacific University announced it is rebranding its nickname as the “Sharks” and unveiled a new logo to accompany it.

“Our brand captures the unique strength, spirit and drive of the HPU athletics program, while honoring our island home,” said Vince Baldemor, HPU’s executive director of athletics. “This marks an exciting new era for HPU athletics and it’s our hope that this new look will inspire our fans, students, and community to join us as we ‘go the distance’ for our university.”

HPU was formerly known as the Sea Warriors for more than 30 years.

The school said the new nickname was the product of “collaborative insights from HPU students, coaches, alumni, faculty, Hawaiian culture consultants and members of the community, the brand unifies HPU athletics’ primary logo, mascot font, logo type and monogram with the university’s identity and honors the cultural significance of the shark to the islands.”
