Coast Guard issues warnings in advance of storms

The Coast Guard is urging mariners and beachgoers to be ready for the changing sea conditions, storm surges and high surf that are on the way as Hurricane Iselle and Tropical Storm Julio approach the islands.

The storms are expected to generate surf of 10-15 feet throughout the entire chain.

The public should monitor media reports, and boaters can monitor the progress of the storms, advisories and warnings on VHF channel 16, Coast Guard officials said.

Emergency responders may not be able to assist people in danger once the storm hits, they said. The public is urged to heed evacuation orders and mariners should seek safe harbor and shelter, officials said.

The Coast Guard also warns residents and tourists to heed warnings from lifeguards and public health and safety officials since rip tides and high surf may impact beaches before the storms reach the islands.
