Under orders from University of Hawaii acting chancellor Reed Dasenbrock, the Rainbow Warriors’ football practice was canceled this morning.

The coaches were ordered to leave the Ching Athletic Complex five minutes before the scheduled practice. After a unanimous vote, the players opted to remain, and they conducted the 90-minute practice without supervision.

Athletic director Ben Jay said Dasenbrock issued a directive maintaining Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s order to close the Manoa campus.

“With the university being closed, they felt there should be no organized team activity,” Jay said.

The Rainbow Wahine soccer team held a practice this morning before the directive was issued.

Jay called football coach Norm Chow just before the start of the Warriors’ practice.

After the coaches jogged off the field, the players took control, even staging a two-minute drill. There was light drizzle for parts of practice, but no inclement weather.

The Warriors hope to practice Saturday morning.
