Man arrested after walking away from work furlough facility

A 27-year-old Hilo man is back in jail after walking away from the Hale Nani work furlough facility Friday.

Kalaikona Fukuhara, who was serving time for burglary, was found in Hilo on Sunday and taken into custody, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree escape and promoting prison contraband.

Fukuhara was returned to the custody of the Department of Public Safety and was being held at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.

The case has been turned over to the county prosecutor’s office.
