Hawaii sweeps Big West volleyball opener

Hawaii outside hitter Tai Manu-Olevao hit past UC Davis' Valerie Brain during the first set on Friday in Davis, Calif.

Junior hitter Tai Manu-Olevao overcame a slow start to finish with a team-high 13 kills and No. 25 Hawaii swept UC Davis 25-18, 25-18, 26-24 in the Big West volleyball opener for both teams Friday in Davis, Calif.

Junior middle Olivia Magill added 10 kills and senior libero Sarah Mendoza 13 digs as the Rainbow Wahine (9-3, 1-0) avenged a five-set loss to the Aggies (5-9, 0-1). Senior middle Kalei Adolpho was in on seven of the team’s 10.5 blocks.

Kaylin Squyres had 13 kills for UCD. 

Hawaii takes a four-match win streak to UC Riverside for Saturday’s match with the Highlander.

The Rainbow Wahine held off set point in Set 3 when trailing 24-23. Hawaii scored three straight on two kills by Manu-Olevao and a block of Squyres by Magill and Nikki Taylor to close out its third consecutive sweep.
