Police arrested a 27-year-old Kaneohe man early Sunday morning for allegedly choking his wife in front of their two minor children.

According to police, the suspect and his 27-year-old wife were arguing when the suspect grabbed the woman’s throat. The woman later complained of neck pain.

The incident allegedly occurred around 4:45 a.m.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of felony assault on a family or household member and interfering with the reporting of an emergency.

A new state law, which took effect June 20, makes physical abuse in the presence of a child under 14, who is a family or household member, a class C felony, punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment.
