Accused murderer Anthony Simoneau with his attorney Lesley Maloian appeared in the court room of Judge Richard Perkins on an extradition hearing Monday morning. He is a charged in the death of his previous wife Fumiko Ogawa.
The 46-year-old San Diego man who fled to Hawaii after allegedly killing his Japanese-born wife entered a plea of not guilty in a San Diego courtroom Monday, the CBS station in San Diego reported.
Anthony Edward Simoneau, 46, is charged in the Jan. 20, 2007, homicide of 41-year-old Fumiko Ogawa Simoneau.
Bail was set at $5 million, with Simoneau due back in court Oct. 8 to set a preliminary hearing. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison.
Simoneau was extradited from Honolulu Friday. Simoneau was arrested Sept. 4.
His wife’s body was found Jan. 20, 2007 near the Bow Willow Campground in the Anza-Borrego Desert but was not identified until 2011, based on DNA evidence. Her cause of death, if known, has not been disclosed.
Simoneau, a former dental technician in the Navy, arrested in Hawaii and brought to San Diego County to face murder charges in the death of his wife, whose body was found near a desert campground.
Simoneau filed to divorce his wife in 2002 but withdrew the court papers when she got an inheritance from relatives in Japan. The couple lived in Point Loma.
