City Enterprise Services Director Gerald Saito is leaving Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s Cabinet at the end of October.

Saito, whose department oversees the city’s major money-making operations including Blaisdell Center, the Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Shell and municipal golf courses, wants to return to retirement, Caldwell spokesman Jesse Broder Van Dyke said this week.

Saito, Longs Drugs’ longtime senior vice president in charge of Hawaii operations, had been in retirement since 2008 when Caldwell selected him to lead the Department of Enterprise Services in early 2013.

Caldwell hopes to have a replacement selected by the time Saito’s resignation takes effect, Broder Van Dyke said.

Saito is the fourth member of Caldwell’s original Cabinet to announce his departure this year, and the second in recent weeks. Pam Witty-Oakland resigned last month as director of the Department of Community Services to spend more time with aging parents.

Toni Robinson resigned as parks director in March while Chris Takashige left his post as director of design and construction in May.

Michele Nekota replaced Robinson earlier this year. Robert Kroning has been named to replace Takashige, and is awaiting City Council confirmation.
